A workshop on the role of intellectual property (IP) in promoting socio-economic development was jointly held by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Hanoi on May 9.

The event aims to bring intellectual property-related issues into policiesand activities of sectors and socio-economic fields.
Participants highlighted the role played by IP in the development of industry,agriculture, culture, health, and education sectors.
Theyagreed that IP contributes to building orientations, targets, missions andmeasures, thus serving as a tool for realising development objectives of sectors,localities and the nation.
The workshop discussed ways to bring contents concerning IP into socio-economicdevelopment polices amid the 4th industrial revolution, towardsdetermining the role of ministries and sectors in integrating and developing IPissues in sectoral development policies, and acquiring experts’ recommendationsfor drafting the National Intellectual Property Strategy.
Addressing the event, Minister of Science and Technology Chu Ngoc Anh stressedthat countries worldwide have to rely on scientific and technology development andinnovation to reach economic growth.
Participantsstressed the importance of State management agencies at all levels in outliningscience- and technology-based socio-economic development policies, adding thatit is necessary to create links for promoting innovation in researchinstitutes, universities and enterprises.
Andrew Michael Ong, WIPO Director for Regional Bureau for Asia andthe Pacific said to maintaincompetitiveness, countries and companies must always be in the forefront ofinnovation in any form.
Vietnam needs to improve capacity and efficiency of establishment, protectionand enforcement of IP rights, as well as pay attention to raising public awarenessof the importance of IP rights, respect and protection of IP rights, theofficial said.-VNA
The HCM City Department of Science and Technology has been trying to commercialise research outcomes by linking demand and supply, investing to bring technologies to the market and helping register intellectual property rights.
In Ho Chi Minh City and the south-western region, individuals set up 75 percent of all start-ups and organisations established the rest, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology Office in the southern region.

Vietnam views sci-tech as a decisive factor in national development and a key tool for achieving sustainable development goals, and is ready to boost sci-tech cooperation with Venezuela for mutual prosperity.
