Can Tho (VNA) – Authorities ofCan Tho and the World Bank held a training workshop on green infrastructure inthe Mekong Delta city on October 12.

Ignacio Ortinez from the ThailandEnvironment Institute detailed an example of covering concrete walls inThailand with various plants.

He suggested Can Tho build more parks inurban areas, which can serve as entertainment zones in the summer and reduceflood risks during the rainy season.

Nguyen Nguyen Minh, a research at theCommonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, said greeninfrastructure means a network that connects green space with theinfrastructure system to function as a natural ecosystem.

He noted alongside planting trees on thesurface, attention should also be paid to underground drainage systems.

Marcel Marchand from Deltares, an institute researchingthe field of water and subsurface, recommended several popular greeninfrastructure models worldwide, including rainwater harvesting systems usingunderground tanks and swamp-like public flower gardens.

He also stressed that careful research isneeded to select suitable models.

Vice Chairwoman of the municipal People’sCommittee Vo Thi Hong Anh said the city will study all recommendationscollected at the workshop and soon turn them into practical plans.

Can Tho has implemented various projects to adaptto climate change, particularly in flood prevention. Green infrastructure solutionsare important, as the city is going to build a 54-hectare new residential areain Ninh Kieu district’s An Binh ward.-VNA

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.
