Hanoi (VNA) – The Multi-Agency Coordination and Emergency OperationsCentre Workshop is being held in Hanoi from September 17-20 to share the latestinformation and scientific knowledge with disaster management officials fromcentral to local levels.

The workshopis jointly organised by theVietnam Disaster Management Authority (VDMA) and the US Forest Service (USFS).

Speaking atthe event, VDMA Director General Tran Quang Hoai said under the US-ASEANcooperation programme in natural disaster management, the VDMA and USFS haveworked together to develop a non-project aid for training and enhancingmanagement capacity in natural disaster prevention and control in Vietnam.

Its objectivesare to strengthen disaster management in Vietnam and to enhance the country’scapacity to respond quickly and effectively to emergency incidents when adisaster occurs, said Hoai, who is also deputy head of the Central SteeringCommittee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.

“Currently, weare doing quite well when a disaster emergency happens because the community, ministries and public agencies, all together, joined hands,” he said. “Butafter the disaster, we almost do nothing.”

“Most of thetime, we have worked based on experience and local funding, following the willof local leaders with lack of proper knowledge in disaster management,” headded.

To solve theproblems, he continued, more attention should be paid to multi-agencycoordination and communications in disaster prevention and control as sharinginformation with the press means sharing with the community to effectivelyresponse to natural disasters./.
