– A workshop was held inHanoi on August 31 to collect opinions from experts, manufacturers andbusinesses to build a decree on organic farming development in Vietnam.

The event was organisedby the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the European Trade Policyand Investment Support Project (EU-MUTRAP).

Participants discussed the revision andmodification of the set of standards TCVN 11041:2005 guiding the manufacturing,processing, labeling and marketing of organic food products.

They also mentioned the strict management ofmanufacturing and business activities and certification of organic farm produceto ensure food safety, quality and origin of products.

Incentives for businesses to invest in producingorganic fertilisers, bio-fertilisers, microorganisms, and biological botanicalproducts were another issue on the agenda, along with the development of brandsand market for Vietnamese organic products.

Former head of the Plant Protection Departmentunder the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Nghiem Xuan Hong saidinternational treaties do not have particular regulations for organic products.Therefore, it is necessary to build a new set of high standards for Vietnameseorganic products.

He suggested investing in technical scientificresearch and supporting cooperative groups and cooperatives to switch toorganic production.

Dao The Anh, deputy director of the Institutefor Food Plants, said in the near future it is essential to improve policiesand legal regulations to boost the development of organic farming.

He recommended promulgating and implementingpolicies to encourage organisations and individuals to join organicagricultural production such as exempting or reducing income taxes andproviding incentives in land lease.

Legal regulations on the management ofproduction, certification and labelling must ensure harmonization between thespecific conditions of Vietnam and regional and global regulations.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and RuralDevelopment Tran Thanh Nam said the organic farming area in Vietnam has beenincreasing over the past few years, which reached about 76,000 hectares in2015, over 3.5 times against 2010.-VNA
