Workshop discusses air-health benefits from clean energy

Hanoi (VNA) – A roundtable dialogue on co-benefitsof sustainable energy development for air quality and community health tookplace in Hanoi on June 13.

Nguy Thi Khanh, director of Vietnam’s Green Innovation andDevelopment Centre (GreenID), said the workshop aims to create a forum toidentify related barriers and solutions to capitalising on co-benefits.

The event consisted of two discussion rounds with theparticipation of five Vietnamese and foreign speakers.

Le Hoang Anh, deputy head of the Northern Centre forEnvironmental Monitoring under the Vietnam Environment Administration,attributed air pollution in urban areas in Vietnam to large and fast increasingnumber of transport vehicles, widespread construction and industrial productionusing outdated technology and violations of environmental protectionregulations.

She suggested a number of measures, including controllingemissions from transport, construction and industrial activities, raisingpublic awareness on the matter, curbing the use of beehive coal stoves, andultilising clean energy sources.

Tran Dinh Sinh, vice director of the GreenID, recommendedVietnam studies three scenarios related to electricity planning, renewableenergy, and energy saving.

Participants said the country should consider thecontribution of energy efficiency and renewable energy in its Power Master PlanVII.

They suggested competent agencies examine and complete emissionstandards for specific sectors, move polluted facilities to suburban areas, andpromote environmentally friendly production.-VNA

🌞 Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
