The World Bank released findings from its study on Vietnam’s l ogisticsand inland waterway transport in Hanoi on January 7.
Addressing the launch ceremony, World Bank Country Director VictoriaKwakwa said as Vietnam is integrating into the world economy and facingclimate change risks such as rising sea level and unpredictable weather,a more sustainable and effective use of inland water transport andcoastal shipping is expected to help increase competitiveness whilecontrolling greenhouse gas emissions.
The report“Efficient Logistics” looks at how competitive transport and tradelogistics can become a new driver of sustained growth through theirpositive impact on productivity and their direct influence on businesscompetitiveness.
It says while Vietnam has attaineda strong track record in economic growth over the past 20 years, thedrivers that fuelled that growth are rapidly depleting, making itcritical to develop new drivers of growth going forward.
The report “Facilitating Trade through Competitive, Low CarbonTransport” examines Vietnam’s inland waterway transport and coastalshipping sector, which are facing significant under-investment in termsof both capital and maintenance expenditures.
Itargues that promoting waterborne transport will bring about significanteconomies of ship size, lowering emissions of pollutants and greenhousegases, as well as other intra-sectoral benefits.-VNA
