Vietnam’s forest coverage reaches 40 percent

The forest coverage of Vietnam in 2011 has reached 40 percent, as a result of activities in responding to the 2011 International Year of Forest launched by the United Nations.
The forest coverage of Vietnam in 2011 has reached 40 percent, as aresult of activities in responding to the 2011 International Year ofForest launched by the United Nations.

Theactivities were carried out both inside and outside the country, aimingto highlight the role of forest in preserving the environment, copingwith climate change, developing the economy, eliminating hunger andreducing poverty.

Among the activities, the 40 thletter writing contest co-organized by Minister of Information andCommunication and Forestry Department of Forestry attracted nearly onemillion children and school pupils under 15 years old nationwide.

Other remarkable activities included the “ Vietnam ’s Forest ” photocontest, the competition of “Discovering the environment and ecosystemof Can Gio mangrove forest” and the first National Festival of ForestProducts.

Vietnam also held a national meetingmarking the World Environment Day and the 2011 International ForestYear, organised conferences and launched forestation projects in thenorthern mountainous province of Bac Kan.

Inparticular, Vietnam cooperated with 9 members of ASEAN to organise aforest exhibition on the occasion of the 33rd meeting of ASEANAgro-forestry Ministers in Jakarta , Indonesia .

Vietnam ’s forestry development strategy, achievements and majorpolicies were also introduced at the second Asia Pacific Forestry Weekin Beijing , China. /.

☂ PM orders strengthened disaster preparedness ahead of storm season

ꦛ Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.

Renowned artists including Ha Anh Tuan, Den Vau, and Phan Manh Quynh, along with many directors and attendees, took part in planting hundreds of rare tree species such as mun (Diospyros mun) and cho chi (Parashorea chinensis) in the Thung Bong area of the Cuc Phuong National Park, contributing to forest ecosystem restoration.
