Vietnamese workers in RoK get together

A get-together among over 400 Vietnamese guest workers in the Republic of Korea took place in Incheon on December 19.

Seoul (VNA) – A get-togetheramong over 400 Vietnamese guest workers in the Republic of Korea took place inIncheon on December 19.

Co-organised by the Vietnam Ministry ofLabour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA), the RoK Human ResourcesDevelopment Service and Incheon Foreign Workers Centre, the event featured amusical concert and a prize draw sponsored by the Vietnam Airlines and otherbusinesses.

Officials in charge of overseas labouraffairs from MoLISA, offered direct consultations for participating workersconcerning administrative procedures upon their returning home. Meanwhile, someexperienced workers shared their knowledge and advised their peers to leavewhen work permits expire to obtain preferential policies from bothgovernments. 

Speaking at the gathering, Tran Anh Vu fromthe Vietnamese Embassy in the RoK lauded effective cooperation between the twonations’ labour agencies.

He highlighted their signing of a memorandumof understanding on the Employment Permit System (EPS) programme in last May,which has reopened opportunities for Vietnamese workers to enter the RoK afterfive-year interruption due to illegal stay in the past.

Vu took note of progress recorded in currentsituation of Vietnamese workers in the RoK thanks to their workers’ betterlegal awareness and support policies issued through cooperation of Vietnameseand Korean state agencies.

He took the occasion to greet the communitya happy New Year and presented certificates of merit for some outstandingworkers.

Le Manh Hung, deputy head of the MoLISA’sOverseas Workers Centre, said the EPS programme has brought positive outcomesafter 12 years of implementation.

It has helped more than 90,000 Vietnamese labourersenter the RoK, with over 40,000 people still working in the host nation, headded.

He also pointed to problems hindering theprogramme that include job switch without clear reasons, unfavorableemployer-worker relationships and illegal residence.

According to Hung, 40 percent of Vietnam’sworkers staying longer their work permits issued by the host nation, 20 percenthigher than the average figure for other countries.
