Vietnamese, Luxembourg FMs review bilateral ties during talks

Hanoi (VNA) – Deputy Prime Minister and ForeignMinister Pham Binh Minh and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs ofLuxembourg Jean Asselborn reviewed the development of bilateral ties duringtheir talks in Hanoi on June 15.

Deputy PM Minh thanked Luxembourg for its strong commitmentsto development cooperation programmes in Vietnam and welcomed the establishmentof Luxembourg’s Honorary Consulate offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, whichhe said, has reflected the country’s desire for strengthening bilateral ties.

He asked for the early organisation of the 10th meeting of the Vietnam – Luxembourg Partnership Committee in 2018 in theEuropean country to review the implementation of Luxembourg-funded projects andprogrammes for the 2016-2020 period.

The host wished that Luxembourg investors would diversifyinvestment in the fields of construction, food processing, high-tech media inVietnam, and the European nation would make it easier for Vietnamese goods to enterthe country and the European Union.

Asselborn, for his part, affirmed that the Luxembourggovernment wants to develop collaboration with Vietnam and considers Vietnam apriority partner in development cooperation in Asia.

The two sides discussed measures to step up bilateral tiessuch as facilitating all-level visits and implementing the framework agreementon cooperation signed in November 2017. They identified cooperation fields inthe new period to effectively use non-refundable aid provided by the LuxembourgCEF for climate change-related projects in Vietnam.

On regional and global issues of shared concern, theypledged to work closely together at regional and global forums.

The Luxembourg side affirmed support for Vietnam toreinforce ties with the EU and its willingness to push for the EU’s earlyapproval of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement.

Luxembourg shared Vietnam’s stance on the East Sea issuethat maritime freedom must be respected everywhere and disputes need to besettled by peaceful means in line with international law, stressing thatensuring maritime and aviation security and safety in the region is not onlyfor the interest of regional countries but also the common interest of theglobal community.

Asselborn expressed support for denuclearisation on theKorean peninsula to contribute to peace, stability and security in the region.

Following the talks, Deputy PM Minh received two honoraryconsuls of Luxembourg in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
