Vietnamese, Chinese companies build coal-fired power plant

The Vinh Tan 3 Energy Joint Stock Company (VTEC) has teamed up with the Chinese Harbin Electric Company in building the 2.7 billion USD Vinh Tan 3 coal-fired thermal power plant in the southern province of Binh Thuan.

At a contract-signing ceremony in Hanoi onOctober 14, Hoang Quoc Vuong, Chairman of the Vietnam Electricity (EVN)said the plant will consist of three turbine groups with a capacity of1,980 MW.

The plant will use imported coal forgenerating over 12 billion kWh a year, which will considerably help thesouthern region ease power shortage.

Construction,which costs 1.14 billion USD, will start in the third quarter of 2014and the plant’s first turbine is expected to generate electricity by2018, he said.

Established in 2009, VTEC – theproject developer, is partnered by EVN, One Energy Ventures Ltd and heThai Binh Duong Company.-VNA
