Vietnamese ambassador vows support for humanitarian demining efforts
Vietnam reaffirmed its commitment to clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) left over from the war during the 53rd regular session of the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) Executive Council on June 27.

Geneva (VNA) – Vietnam reaffirmed its commitment to clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) left over from the war during the 53rd regular session of the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) Executive Cou🎉ncil on June 27.
Ambassador Mai Phan Dung, Vietnam's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, World Trade Organisation (WTO), and other international organisations in Geneva, pledged Vietnam's active participation in the council's joint work. He also highlighted Vietnam's dedication to effective cooperation with GICHD in the coming time.
He specifically underlined ongoing mine clearance projects in Vietnam and expressed a desire to explore new collaboration opportunities.
The session itself focused on GICHD's recent activities, including financial reports and donor contributions. The council also charted a course for the its future endeavors.
On the occasion, Dung was unanimously elected as a member of the GICHD Executive Council.
Founded in 1998, the non-profit GICHD, now grouping 23 members, acts as a centre for research, training and support for international community to reduce mine and UXO risks through collaboration with the UN, affected countries, inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations, research institutes, and other entities./.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has signed a decision approving a 2023-2025 national action programme on the settlement of consequences of unexploded ordnances (UXOs) left by the war.
As one of countries most affected by unexploded ordnance (UXO) left over from the war, Vietnam has paid special attention to the clearance of bombs and mines in order to free land to serve socio-economic development and at the same time promote activities to support and help UXO victims.
Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Defence Sen. Lieut. Gen Hoang Xuan Chien said he hopes that the US will continue offering long-term funding to Vietnam to help the country deal with the consequences of bombs, mines and unexploded ordinance left over from the war and create gainful livelihoods for those living in affected areas.
The UN Secretary-General praised Vietnam’s remarkable achievements in socio-economic development and international integration in recent years, noting that the country has emerged as a model in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting international peace and security, and engaging in key UN processes.
Nghia affirmed that this is a milestone of special significance, affirming and honouring the the Vietnamese revolutionary press’s glorious tradition of 100 years of serving the revolutionary cause of the Party, serving the Fatherland, and serving the people.
