Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc had a meeting withchief representatives of United Nations agencies in Vietnam in Hanoi on October24, on the United Nations Day.
Phuc stressed that Vienam attaches importance to itsrelations with the UN. He recalled his attendance at the High-Level GeneralDebate of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York in September,adding that he was impressed by a speech by UN Secretary-General AntonioGuterres which highlighted preventive diplomacy, conflict control, climatechange response and gender equality.
UN Resident Coordinator Kamal Malhotra described Vietnam asone of the leading countries in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda onSustainable Development.
To well implement sustainable development goals (SDGs) by2030, he emphasised the need for the UN and Vietnam to hold a high-level forumto reach a consensus on financial sources.
Representatives of UN agencies in Vietnam congratulated thecountry on its socio-economic development achievements, and showed theirsupport for the country’s efforts to respond to climate change, intensifyeconomic reform, and boost the development of the private economy.
They vowed to cooperate with Vietnam in socio-culture andchild care, while appreciating and backing Vietnam’s commitments toenvironmental protection.
PM Phuc affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to theUN’s central role and considers the organisation one of the priorities in itsforeign policy, and a leading partner.
Vietnam will maintain its active and responsiblecontributions to the UN’s works in all the three pillars of peace, development,and human rights promotion, the Government leader affirmed.
He spoke highly of support by the UN agencies, which, hesaid, has brought practical benefits to Vietnam.
He suggested both sides maintain coordination tosuccessfully carry out SDGs, global commitments and agreements to addresschallenges such as climate change adaptation and protection and sustainable useof water resources in the Mekong River basin.
He proposed UNICEF help Vietnam in making laws and policiesmore friendly to children, WHO in building a modern health system, and ILO inensuring social equality.
For its part, Vietnam will step up collaboration with the UNand create all favourable for its agencies in the nation, he said, adding thatit supports the organisation’s development system reform efforts.-VNA
