Vietnam supports Sudan, South Sudan in resolving Abyei issues peacefully

New York (VNA) –Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of the Vietnamese Permanent Mission to theUnited Nations, has expressed Vietnam’s wish that the governments of Sudan andSouth Sudan will soon address Abyei issues via peaceful means and on theground of international law, the UN Charter, and their agreement signed on June20, 2011.
Attending a videoconference of the UN SecurityCouncil (UNSC) on April 28, the Vietnamese diplomat spoke highly of thepositive developments over the past time in Sudan and South Sudan.
He called on Sudan and South Sudan tostrengthen coordination with the United Nations Interim Security Force forAbyei (UNISFA) in COVID-19 response, and welcomed the efforts of the UN,organisations and countries in the region, including the African Union (AU) andEthiopia in supporting the two countries' resolution of Abyei matters.
The ambassador also praised the endevours ofUNISFA, especially the participation of its female forces in protectingcivilians, as well as voiced his support for the extension of the UNISFAmandate as recommended by the UN Secretary-General.
On June 20, 2011, Sudan and South Sudansigned an agreement whereby the two sides pledged to withdraw troops from ademilitarized zone in Abyei and establish a joint mechanism to solve Abyeiissues.
UNISFA was established on June 27, 2011 inaccordance with the 1990 Resolution of the UNSC to protect civilians andpromote demilitarisation in Abyei. In the following week, UNSC countries willnegotiate a resolution to extend the mandate of UNISFA – which is due to expireon May 15, 2020./.
Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of the Vietnamese mission to the United Nations, has suggested further discussing to complete an institutional framework on climate change issues.
Vietnam well performed its role as the UN Security Council (UNSC) President in January, actively contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world at large.

During the negotiations, the US highly evaluated Vietnam’s goodwill and efforts, affirmed its appreciation for the bilateral relationship, acknowledged Vietnam’s proposals and concerns, and considered these an important basis for continuing discussions and moving towards a final agreement.
The Chairman stressed the need for stricter fiscal discipline, faster digital transformation, and more efficient management of State budget revenues and expenditures.
