Vietnam supports disarmament, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons: Diplomat

Ambassador Pham Hai Anh, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of Vietnam to the United Nations (UN), has affirmed Vietnam’s consistent support for the disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, as well as the right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes as stipulated in the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

New York (VNA) – Ambassador Pham Hai Anh, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. ofVietnam to the United Nations (UN), has affirmed Vietnam’s consistent support forthe disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, as wellas the right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes as stipulated in the Treatyon the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

Addressing ameeting of the UN Security Council on December 14 to discuss theimplementation of the council’s Resolution 2231, which endorsed the 2015 JointComprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran’s nuclear programmes, the Vietnamesediplomat reiterated Vietnam's support for the implementation of the JCPOA and Resolution2231 and called on relevant parties to strictly and fully implement these agreements.

He applauded theresumption of negotiations between parties in Vienna, Austria, in recent times.

The ambassador underlinedthe need to exercise restraint and avoid actions that erode trust and increasetensions, and focus efforts on dialogue and negotiation in order to resolvedifferences.

Vietnam is willing to contribute to efforts inorder to create a favourable environment for dialogue and cooperation atinternational forums, including the UNSC the InternationalAtomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s Board of Governors, of which Vietnam is amember, for peace, stability and development in the Middle East and in theworld, he said.

Rapporteurs said the JCPOA and Resolution 2231 remainimportant achievements of multilateral diplomacy and efforts in non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, and the best way to promote a comprehensive, long-lasting andsuitable solution to the nuclear issue of Iran,contributing to regional and international peace and security.

They called on parties concerned to continue their negotiation efforts, and fully implementthe JCPOA in Vienna, Austria. 

Representatives from UNSC member states underlined theimportance of Resolution 2231 and the JCPOA inresolving the nuclear issue of Iran and obligations of parties to fully implement thisresolution and agreement, and called for restraint from actions that increasetensions and complication in the region.

They said it is neces꧒saryto promote dialogue to seek peaceful solutions to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the region./.
