Vietnam suggests early finalisation of code of conduct on seabed mining

New York (VNA) – Chargé d'Affaires of Vietnam to the United Nations Ambassador Pham Hai Anh suggestedthe International Seabed Authority (ISA) Assembly prioritise early finalising a code of conduct on seabed mining while attending the 26th session of the ISA Assembly held both online and offline inJamaica from November 13-15.
In his speech from New York, Anhsaid the code of conduct must be in line with the principle of consideringseabed and its mineral resources as a common heritage of the humankind, ensurefair and equal sharing of benefits, comply with the 1982 United NationsConvention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)’s terms regarding environmentalprotection, and pay attention to interests and demands of developingnations.
The Vietnamese representative proposed the ISA soon resume activities tosupport developing countries, improve their capacity and share technologies with them.
Anh also reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment toupholding the UNCLOS’s role as a comprehensive international legal tool toadjust activities at seas and oceans, including the exploration and exploitationof mineral resources and environment protection at seabed.
𒅌 At the event, the ISA Assembly electedmembers of its Finance Committee, and discussed the implementation of the ISA’sAction Plan for the Decade of OceanSciences for Sustainable Development./.
As mining activities are seasonal and affected by the weather, revenue and profit of coal mining businesses have fluctuated continuously over the past 10 years.
The 14th meeting between senior officials on minerals of the 10 ASEAN countries and China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (RoK) (ASOMM+3) was held via videoconference on October 7.
