Vietnam selected as only Asian pilot country in UK’s new global healthcare partnership

Vietnam has been selected as the only Asian pilot country in a new global healthcare partnership founded by the World Economic Forum (WEF), the UK-based London School of Economics (LSE) and British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca.

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam has been selected as the only Asian pilot country in a newglobal healthcare partnership founded by the World Economic Forum (WEF), theUK-based London School of Economics (LSE) and British pharmaceutical giantAstraZeneca.

Launched inVietnam on November 18, the Partnership for Global Health System Sustainabilityand Resilience (PHSSR) aims to initiate a multi-sector effort to help healthsystems foresee, prevent, and adapt to the diverse health challenges the worldfaces.

In the pilotphase, running until January 2021, the project will be implemented in eightcountries including the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Russia, Poland, and Vietnam, amongst which Vietnam is theonly Asian country because of its unique health system experiences andexpertise, including its effective COVID-19 response.

PHSSR’s Vietnamteam will apply a new Framework developed by the LSE to conduct a rapid reviewof the country’s health system sustainability and resilience, and identifypractical solutions to strengthen them for the benefits of Vietnamese people.

Policyrecommendations from the pilot phase will inform The Great Reset – an initiativeby the WEF – and be announced at its virtual event in January 2021.

BritishAmbassador Gareth Ward expressed his delight that the UK and Vietnam are bothpart of the Partnership’s pilot phase, exchanging knowledge and experience toenhance both countries’ health systems and be better prepared for future healthcrises. He looked forward to further advancing UK-Vietnam health cooperationand bilateral relations.

While theCOVID-19 pandemic has been catastrophic, it also presents a brief window ofopportunity to act, said AstraZeneca Vietnam Chairman & General DirectorNitin Kapoor. The pandemic has generated unprecedented public awareness, andthe political will to address global health issues, he said.

Vietnam’sdecisive leadership and swift action in its pandemic response have beeninspirational to the world, he noted, adding that his company expects to workclosely with the Vietnamese Government and the Ministry of Health, among others, tomaximise the project’s impact and increase local patients’ access to qualityhealthcare./.
