Vietnam seeks re-election to UN Human Rights Council
Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son has called on countries to support Vietnam's bid for re-election as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026-2028 tenure.

Geneva (VNA) – Ministerof Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son has called on countries to support Vietnam's bidfor re-election as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) forthe 2026-2028 tenure.
Leading a Vietnamese delegation to the UNHRC’s 55th session in Geneva on Feburary 26, Minister Son said human rights could only be best ensured in apeaceful, stable environment where international law is maintained andrespected, and where the State places its people at the centre of all policies,ensuring comprehensive and sustainable development.
He underscored the need for the UNHRC to prioritisefulfilling basic human rights needs, including access to economic, social, andcultural rights, the right to development, and ensuring the protection ofvulnerable groups.
The UNHRC should pay attention to promoting theimplementation of Vietnam’s proposed Resolution 52/19, especially urgingcountries to promote mutual respect, understanding, tolerance, inclusiveness,unity, and appreciation of differences, dialogue, and cooperation, he added.
The ministeralso reaffirmed Vietnam's priorities if re-elected, including protectingvulnerable groups, promoting gender equality, embracing digitaltransformation, and upholding human rights.
At the56th session of the UNHRC in June, Vietnam will propose an annualresolution on ensuring human rights in the face of climate change, he said.
