Vietnam reiterates commitment to UN Charter’s purpose, principles

Vietnam has reaffirmed its strong commitment to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter at an open debate of the Security Council held on February 23.
Vietnam has reaffirmed its strong commitment to the purposes andprinciples of the United Nations Charter at an open debate of theSecurity Council held on February 23.

The debate on“Maintenance of international peace and security: Reflect on history,reaffirm the strong commitment to the purposes and principles of theCharter of the UN” was organized at China’s initiative.

In her statement at the event, Vietnam’s Permanent Representative tothe United Nations Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga stressed that the UN,guided by the purposes and principles of its Charter, has grown to betruly universal and indispensable in coordinating international effortsto address global challenges.

She noted that the UNand its members have relentlessly worked to reign in wars and conflicts,strengthened international cooperation for development and for thepromotion and protection of human rights, promoted the progressivedevelopment of international law, and strengthened democracy and justicein inter-state relations.

The Ambassador went on tosay that the challenges the world faces today are ever more daunting,citing wars in many regions, the risks of armed conflicts and the threator use of force and the wishful thinking of power politics.

“This compels us to take up our collective duty to reinforce andmaterialise the strong commitment to the principles and purposes of theCharter, including the principles of sovereign equality, nationalsovereignty, territorial integrity, non-interference and peacefulsettlement of disputes,” she said.

The Vietnameserepresentative also called for redoubling efforts to address issues suchas poverty, hunger, and inequality, which are among the root causes ofinsecurity and instability.

“We must allcontribute to the maintenance of international peace and securitythrough concrete, practical actions, including the development andpromotion of principles, norms and codes of conducts in accordance withthe principles set out in the Charter,” the ambassador told the debate.

She added that the Security Council and its permanent members in particular have a special role to play in this regard.

Ambassador Nga made clear that Vietnam is strongly committed to thepurposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law, andalways contributes actively and constructively to common endeavours forregional and international peace, stability and security.

She affirmed that Vietnam is working with other ASEAN members andpartners to develop and adhere to mutually agreed principles and codesof conduct, and settle all disputes, including the East Sea (South ChinaSea) issue, by peaceful means, in accordance with the UN Charter andinternational law.

“We are doing our best to buildan ASEAN Community and a Southeast Asian region of peace andprosperity,” she said while expressing the firm belief that peace anddiplomacy, law and reason will prevail.-VNA
