Vietnam ready to send more officers to UN peacekeeping missions

Hanoi (VNA) – Sen. Lt. Gen. Pham Ngoc Minh,Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, stressed hiscountry’s readiness for UN peacekeeping operations at talks with UK officers onJanuary 20.
He had talks in Hanoi with a delegation of thearmy medical services led by Major General Martin Bricknell, Director ofthe Medical Policy & Operational Capability atthe UK Ministry of Defence.
He highly valued the UK military medical force’scapacity and experience in combat, humanitarian aid and UN peacekeeping,especially the commanding and operation of level-2 field hospitals.
Vietnam is carrying out a plan for 2014-2020 ondeploying field hospitals for the UN’s peacekeeping operations.
It has sent 12 officers to serve as staffofficers, liaison officers and military observers at the UN missions in SouthSudan and the Central African Republic. Their performance has been highlyregarded by the UN, the mission commanders and international counterparts, Minhnoted.
He added his country has completed personnelpreparations, pre-deployment training, and foreign language training. It isready to have its preparedness examined by the UN’s working group beforeofficers are sent to UN missions.
He also asked the UK’s army medical services toenhance cooperation with the Vietnam People’s Army.
At the talks, Bricknell said his delegation hada working session the Vietnam Peacekeeping Centre, and they agreed on somemajor cooperation activities in the time ahead.
He shared some of the UK’s experiences indeploying level-2 field hospitals in peacekeeping operations, includingpersonnel and equipment preparations, pre-deployment training and negotiationwith the UN.
Speaking highly of Vietnam’s readiness, heexpressed his belief that with its experience and officers’ adaptability anddiscipline, the country’s level-2 field hospitals will fulfill tasks at UNpeacekeeping missions.

UN peacekeeping operations play an important role in preserving international peace and security, helping create a peaceful and stable environment for development, said Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga.
Vietnamese peacekeeping lecturers were equipped with basic knowledge about peacekeeping operations during the two-week UN Capacity-Building Pre-Deployment Training Course in English.
The Vietnam Peacekeeping Centre on December 7 and France’s Embassy in Vietnam organised a workshop exchanging experience on the sending of a sapper unit to the UN peacekeeping missions.
