Vietnam promotes fight against domestic violence

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has approved the investment plan of a project to carry out policies and programmes to prevent and respond to gender-based violence, domestic violence and handle the issue of prostitution, using evidence and a human right-based approach.

Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has approved theinvestment plan of a project to carry out policies and programmes to prevent andrespond to gender-based violence, domestic violence and handle the issue ofprostitution, using evidence and a human right-based approach.

The project is funded by the United Nations Population Fund and the Ministry ofLabour, and is carried out by the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and SocialAffairs (MoLISA). The funding for the project is over 7.7 million USD innon-refundable official development assistance (ODA).

A study on behavioural changes in male chauvinism will be conducted under theproject, providing a basis for amending the Law on Gender Equality, the Law onDomestic Violence Prevention and Control and other policies.

Standards for gender-based violence prevention will be built alongside variouscommunication campaigns on policy advocacy and behavioural changes togetherwith models involving male farmers to stave off domestic violence.

Scientific evidence will also be gathered to build a bill featuring prostitutionissues. Capacity in building and implementing policies on gender equality, domesticviolence prevention and control and prostitution issues will also be enhancedthrough the project.

The MoLISA is expected to build an appropriate management mechanism for theproject and identify the responsibilities of agencies, project owners andco-ordinating organisations to ensure its effectiveness.-VNA
