Hanoi (VNA) - ඣThe Prime Minister has approved the project to develop competency for the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol on genetic resources access and benefit-sharing in Vietnam.
The project uses a non-refundable aid of over 12.5 million USD from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) via the Global Environmental Fund (GEF).
The four-year project is be implemented in Hanoi and the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai, aiming to sustainably preserve and utilise bio-diversity in Vietnam via increasing the nation’s competency in implementing the protocol.
As a party to the multilateral treaty since March 17, 2014, Vietnam has set and followed a blueprint to achieve its sustainable goals by 2020.
As such, the country is scheduled to issue sufficient legal frameworks for accessing genetic resources and fairly and equitably sharing benefits arising from their utilisation (ABS) by 2017, establish an ABS model in 2018, and complete a national data system on genetic resources in 2020.
In recent years, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has focused on information summation and international cooperation exchanges on the matter.
Vietnam issued the Law on Bio-Diversity in 2008 and a relevant guidance decree in 2010.-VNA
An international workshop to strengthen access and benefit sharing of genetic resources (ABS) among ASEAN member nations was held in Hanoi on November 20.
Over 500 foreign and domestic scientists, lecturers and post graduates joined the national bio-technology conference held in the central coastal city of Da Nang on July 7.
The implementation of the Nagoya Protocol on genetic resources access and benefit-sharing in Vietnam was reviewed at a seminar held in Hanoi on September 28.

Since 2022, more than 500 Vietnamese startups have engaged in Google’s Startup Academy, Google for Startups Accelerator, and Google Startup Masterclass. Nearly 100 of these firms received support to develop and improve their products, benefiting more than 300,000 customers and creating over 300 new jobs through successful fundraising and team expansion amidst Vietnam’s competitive economy.
