Vietnam, Netherlands agree to enhance agricultural partnership

Hanoi (VNA) – Minister of Agriculture and RuralDevelopment Nguyen Xuan Cuong and Dutch Vice Minister of Agriculture, Natureand Food Quality Marjolijn Sonnema discussed ways to boost partnership in sustainable agricultureand food security in Hanoi on April 9.

The two sidesshared information and viewpoints on policies, situation and potential ofbilateral cooperation within the framework of the Vietnam-Netherlands StrategicPartnership Arrangement (SPA) in sustainable agriculture and food security.

Cuong and Sonnemaagreed that the development of sustainable value chain plays the role as the backbonein partnership between the two countries, with focus on customers’ demands andproduction efficiency, not productivity.

Dutchtechnologies will contribute to the expansion of sustainable value chains byreducing post-harvest losses, they held.

The two sides concurredthat the Netherlands and Vietnam will work together in building a roadmap toapply and develop post-harvest technologies.

They agreed that thetransformation of the agricultural sector of the Mekong Delta region willremain a major cooperation orientation between the two sides within the SPAframework in the future.

Noting thatdiseases, especially the African swine fever that has caused greatsocio-economic loss, the Dutch side affirmed its willingness to support Vietnamin developing disease-free areas. The two sides also discussed issues relatedto animal and plant quarantine.

The Netherlandsand Vietnam shares many similarities and have enjoyed traditional partnershipin many areas, especially in agricultural and natural resource development.

Over the past years,the Netherlands has been a leading partner of Vietnam in development, watermanagement and climate change response. The two sides have jointly implementeda number of projects in biogas development, food safety, climate changemitigation and natural resources development.

Minister Cuongexpressed his hope that the Netherlands with share its experience with Vietnamin reforming agricultural production, investment and businesses, as well asapplying achievements of the Fourth Industrial Revolution into smartagriculture, thus optimising the advantages of Vietnamese agricultural sector,and enhancing the value of farm produce and improving farmers’ income.-VNA
