Vietnam National Mekong Committee to strengthen organisation
The standing office of Vietnam National Mekong Committee should focus on implementing a project on strengthening the organisation of the committee after the project receives the Prime Minister’s approval, according to Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Le Cong Thanh.

Hanoi (VNA) – The standing officeof Vietnam National Mekong Committee should focus on implementing a project onstrengthening the organisation of the committee after the project receives thePrime Minister’s approval, according to Deputy Minister of Natural Resourcesand Environment Le Cong Thanh.
Giving directions on the operation of the committee in 2019 at a meetingin Hanoi on December 25, the Deputy Minister said the office needs to promoteinformation exchange among the committee’s members and experience sharing withinternational partners in the management of water resources.
He also urged the office to keep a close watch of activities ofcountries in the Mekong River basin such as Laos and Cambodia.
Representatives from other agencies under the Ministry of NaturalResources and Environment proposed that the committee continue to closelymonitor the exploitation and use of water resources and other resources in theMekong River basin while promoting international cooperation.
They also recommended enhancing negotiationcapacity for the committee’s staff who directly involves in the Mekong Rivercooperation activities so as to protect national interests.
Chief of the office Le Duc Trung reported that in 2018, the officecoordinated with the Mekong River Commission (MRC) to organise successfully the25th meeting of the MRC Council and the 23rd meeting with the MRC’s developmentpartners.
The office also fulfilled its leading role inbilateral and multilateral cooperation initiatives including the Mekong –Lancang cooperation on water resources, training and experience sharingactivities, the Mekong-US downstream cooperation and Mekong-Japan cooperationinitiatives, he noted.-VNA
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh on December 17 joined FMs of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and China at the fourth Mekong – Lancang Cooperation (MLC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Vientiane, Laos.
The 77th Mekong River joint patrol by China, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand began on December 18 from Guan Lei port, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China's Yunnan province.
