Vietnam National Film Festival opens in Hue city

The 22nd Vietnam National Film Festival kicked off both offline and online in Hue city in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue.

ThuaThien-Hue (VNA) - The 22nd Vietnam National FilmFestival kicked off both offline and online in Hue city in the centralprovince of Thua Thien-Hue. 

Underthe motto of “Building a Vietnamese Film Industry Rich in NationalIdentity, Modernity and Humanity”, the festival will run untilNovember 20 featuring 128 films from 42 units, including 26 motionpictures, 56 documentaries, 15 scientific films, and 31 animated films.

The22nd festival will present two new awards, one for a featurefilm with the best cinematography and the other for outstanding debut by adirector. 

"Thenew awards honour the development of cinematic effects in the cinemaindustry and new directing talents," said Vi Kien Thanh, Director of the Ministryof Culture, Sports and Tourism's Department of Cinematography and head ofthe festival's organisation board.  

Thenew award for outstanding debut by a director will see competition among threedirectors including Mai Thu Huyen with “Kieu”, and Nguyen Manh Ha with “LinhChien” (War Soldiers).

Comparedto the previous edition of the festival, the number of motion pictures hasincreased to 26 films. Seventeen films are selected to compete indifferent categories and the last will be shown in the PanoramaProgramme. 

Besidesthe five films ordered by the State-owned studios, the others wereproduced by private studios, mainly in categories such as horror and action.

Somemovies screened at cinemas achieved high box office revenue, such as “Bo Gia” (Dad,I'm Sorry), “Gai Gia Lam Chieu V” (Camellia Sisters), “MatBiec” (Dreamy Eyes) and “Tiec Trang Mau” (Blood MoonParty).

Filmson war and the post-war period, which have not been seen in cinemas,will also feature at the festival. The films include “Con Giong” (AThunderstorm) by Tran Ngoc Phong, “Binh Minh Do” (Red Dawn) byNguyen Thanh Van, “Khuc Mua” (The Rain) by Bui Tuan Dung, and “LinhChien” (War Soldiers) by Nguyen Manh Ha.

Documentariesaccount for a large number of the total works. The Central Science andDocumentary Studio sent the most documentaries to the festival, with 24 films.

Inaddition to the themes of resistance wars and historical figures, manydocumentaries highlight the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam,making a very strong impression on audiences such as the film “Ranh Gioi” (TheBoundary) by Ta Quynh Tu from Vietnam National Television.

Thefestival will give individual awards honouring the best director, bestscriptwriter, best cameraman, best actor and actress, best musician and bestdirector of photography.

Despitethe many impacts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the film industry has madegreat efforts to maintain production activities and complete many cinematicworks, said Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dongat a recent press conference held in Hanoi.  

Inaddition to honouring the country's film industry, the festival will be abridge for new films to reach the public via digital platforms, he said.

Anumber of side line events will be organised both in virtual and in-personforms.

 Anexhibition themed “Thua Thien-Hue - Destination of FilmMakers”, and an online exchange programme with artists will be held. A filmweek was held both in the capital city of Hanoi and the central city of DaNang between November 10-16. 

The awardceremony will be held at 8pm on November 20 at Song Huong Theatre andbroadcast live on Vietnam National Television./.

📖 Vietnam re-elected to 2005 UNESCO Convention’s Intergovernmental Committee
