Vietnam initiative promotes sustainable development of water resources

Measures to promote cooperation for sustainable development of water resources are being discussed during the Vietnam International Water Week 2018 in Vietnam from March 4-8, which gathers representatives from more than 30 countries and territories worldwide.

Hanoi (VNA) – Measuresto promote cooperation for sustainable development of water resources are beingdiscussed during the Vietnam International Water Week 2018 from March 4-8, which gathers representativesfrom more than 30 countries and territories worldwide.

Themed “Vietnam WaterCooperation Initiative” (VACI), the event offers a chance for enterprises to show their commitmentto protecting water resources and the environment.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Quy Kien affirmed Vietnam’sconsistent stance of managing water resources in an integrated manner, which ishighlighted in the National Strategy on Water Resources.

Water use must be in line with the economic restructuring in the context of industrialisation,he said, adding that water resources should be developed sustainably, and usedeconomically and effectively.

This management method is clearly shown in decrees, decisions, circulars aswell as in the implementation of water resources management policies, he noted.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the world's water exploitation increases by 1 percent per year, puttingpressure on many countries and territories.   

About 780 million people worldwide don’t haveaccess to clean and safe water sources, while both surface water andgroundwater are increasingly degraded and polluted.

The United Nations has estimated that the world's population will need 30 percent more clean water by 2030, and 44 percent by2050.

GeneralDirector of the Centre for Planning and Surveying National Water Resources Tong Ngoc Thanh said the VACI 2018 also aims to call for more effortsfrom enterprises to develop technological solutions in the field, and to raiseawareness of water resources and environmental protection.

The plenary session “Water is the goal of sustainable development” is thehighlight of the event, which also includes 23 seminars with nearly 500scientific reports on   monitoring and forecasting of water resources,climate change adaptation in Asia and management of water resources in SoutheastAsia.

Exhibitions of photos and technologies and training courses related to water resourcesmanagement are also part of the event.-VNA

♛ Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

♈ Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
