Vietnam hopes for more support from UN Environment

Hanoi (VNA)– Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung met Director of the UN Environment ProgrammeErik Solheim Hanoi on August 8, during which he proposed that the UNEnvironment continue supporting Vietnam in reviewing, revising and completinglaws and policies related to environment.

Vietnam hopes toreceive assistance in conducting national action programmes on responding to climatechange, green house emission, and forest protection, said Deputy PM Dung.

He also suggested thatthe UN Environment sent experts to Vietnam, and share experience inenvironmental protection and related issues, while helping the country inpersonnel training.

He affirmed that theVietnamese Government is always determined to protect the environment and notto exchange the environment for economic development.

At the meeting, DeputyPM Dung lauded the cooperation and support that the UN Environment has given toVietnam over the past years, especially in technique, experience,policy-making, and personnel training, which has significantly contributed to protectingthe environment in Vietnam.

He clarified theGovernment’s management and direction in designing socio-economic policiesaswell as legal administration is crucial in preserving the environment, alongwith the development of renewable energy and science and technology, theimprovement of human resources and community’s awareness in the field.

Currently, Vietnam is goingforwards green and environmentally-friendly growth with science and technologyplaying the core role, and the private sector acting as pioneer in ensuringwaste treatment and minimisinggreen house emission.

For his part, ErikSolheim congratulated Vietnam on socio-economic development, especially inagriculture and education expressing hope that Vietnam will continue gainingsuccess in the area of environment.

Sharing Dung’s opinion,Solheim said that the UN Environment will continue walking hands in hands withcountries, including Vietnam in promoting cooperation and support in the environment.

During his visit toVietnam, Solheim and his delegation also visited the Cuc Phuong National Parkand recognised Vietnam’s efforts in preserving rare animals.

He also held thatVietnam is eyeing many capital resources and other resources for sustainabledevelopment.-VNA

ไ Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
