Vietnam, Denmark promote energy partnership

Hanoi (VNA) – Deputy Minister of Industry andTrade Dang Hoang Giang and Danish Ambassador to Vietnam Kim Højlund Christensenco-chaired the first meeting of the Steering Committee of the Vietnam-DenmarkEnergy Partnership Programme in the period of 2020-2025 (DEPP3 Programme).

Managed by the Energy Efficiency and SustainableDevelopment Department, the project has a total investment of about 8.96 millionUSD of non-refundable ODA from Denmark.

It aims to support Vietnam in building a roadmap to promotelow carbon development in the industrial sector, which helps the countryrealise its nationally determined contribution (NDC) commitments following theParis Agreement on climate change, raising NDC targets and strengtheningrelevant solutions in 2025.

The programme has three components, focusing on building long-term planning ofthe energy sector, improving the capacity to integrate renewable energy intothe power system, and promoting low-carbon development in industry.

At the meeting, representatives from agencies involving in the implementation ofthe programme, including the Department of Electricity and Renewable Energy,the Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam, and the Department of EnergyEffciency and Sustainable Development under the Ministry of Industry and Trade,and the Danish Energy Agency reported outcomes of their action plans in 2021 ofthe DEPP3, as well as the plan for 2022. Despite the COVID-19 impacts, last year,positive results were recorded in the implementation of the programme, they said.

The programme’s Steering Committee approved its action plan for 2022.

In the future, the Ministry of Industry and Trade willcontinue to coordinate with the Danish Energy Agency in the implementationof the newly-approved action plan for 2022./.

ಞ Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

ꦡ Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
