Vietnam calls for training, building UN peacekeeping forces

New York (VNA) – Nations need to activelysupport and implement the Declaration of Shared Commitments on UN PeacekeepingOperations 2018, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of Vietnam’s permanent missionto the United Nations, has said.
He made the statement at an open discussionconducted by the UN Security Council on May 7 with the topic "Investing inpeace: Training and building quality capacity to enhance safety, security andefficiency enforcement for the UN peacekeeping force.”
Investment in training and building capacity forpeacekeeping forces should be carried out synchronously at different levels,taking into account the requirements of areas and female peacekeepers, he said.
At the national level, he suggested countriesincrease the revision, preparation and training of forces that meet UNstandards, focusing on pre-deployment training.
Useful UN documents should be updated regularly,he added.
At the regional level, the Ambassadorrecommended enhancing information and experience exchanges, including cooperationbetween training centres.
At the global level, the UN system shouldpromote partnerships and share responsibilities among UN agencies, especiallybetween the Security Council, the Secretariat and nations sending troops to theUN peacekeeping missions as well as standardise procedures and ensure budgetsfor training activities, he said.
He added that Vietnam had hosted activities ofthe Triangular Partnership Project on the rapid deployment of building capacityfor peacekeepers. The project was chaired by the UN with the involvement of manyUN member countries.
During the May 7 discussion, the participantsagreed on the necessity to enhance the training work to increase safety,security and operational efficiency of peacekeeping forces.
They advocated the efforts of UNSecretary-General Antonio Guterres and UN agencies in implementing commitmentsand strengthening triangular cooperation and vowed to push ahead with mutualsupport and collaboration in peacekeeping activities, promote the engagement ofwomen in the field and prevent sexual violence.
The Non-Aligned Movement countries agreed theimprovement of peacekeeping operations should follow the basic principles ofthe UN, while ASEAN nations suggested exchanging professional experiences andgiving mutual support through partnership frameworks.-VNA
