Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam joined other 26 member states of the ASEANRegional Forum (ARF) at the ARF Defence Officials’ Dialogue (DOD), which waschaired by Haji Adi Ihram Bin Dato Paduka Haji Mahmud, Deputy PermanentSecretary of Policy and Strategy at the Brunei Defence Ministry, and DavidLewis, Assistant Secretary Southeast Asia under the Australia’s Department ofDefence in the form of video conference.
The Vietnamese delegation was led by Lieutenant General Vu Chien Thang,Director General of the Foreign Relations Department under the Ministry ofDefence.
At the dialogue, Brigadier General Dato Seri Pahlawan Shahril Anwar bin HajiMa’awiah, Permanent Secretary of the Brunei Ministry of Defence, called onnations to boost their sound collaboration, including strong defencecooperation, in the context that the region and the world are facing a widerange of security challenges.
He expressed his hope that the ARF member countries will have moreopportunities to learn from each other, as well as work closely to help theregion get ready and stay resilient to cope with future challenges,particularly the critical impacts of COVID-19.
This year DOD aimed to discuss measures to narrow gap in knowledge of emergingtechnologies between nations, and their influences on defence-security.
Participants also worked to agree the agenda in preparation for the 18th ASEANRegional Forum Security Policy Conference (ASPC-18) scheduled for late thismonth. It will be hosted by Brunei and in the form of video conference./.
Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, Sen. Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Phuong Nam, led a delegation of the Ministry of National Defence to attend the 18th ASEAN Chiefs of Defence Forces’ Meeting (ACDFM-18), held via videoconference on March 18 under the chair of Brunei.
The two-day ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting (ADSOM) opened virtually on March 24 under the chair of the Permanent Secretary of the Brunei Ministry of Defence, Brigadier General (retired) Dato Seri Pahlawan Shahril Anwar Bin Haji Ma’awiah.
Defence Minister Sen. Lieut. Gen Phan Van Giang held a video call on May 6 with his Lao counterpart, General Chansamon Chanyalat, to discuss measures to boost defence cooperation suitable to the new circumstances.
