Veggie festival coming to Hanoi

Hanoi (VNA) - A large-scale festival to promote vegetarianculture, express gratitude to parents and mark Mother’s Day will be held in Hanoion September 30.

The Tet Chay Vu Lan (VuLan Veggie Festival) is held annually one month after the  VuLan (7th full-moon festival) celebration - an important Buddhistholiday on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month.

The veggie festivalincludes expressions of gratitude and appreciation for mothers, and isbased on the belief that eating vegetarian food on this occasion will makeprayers for parents more powerful.  Inmodern times, Vu Lan also marks Mother’s Day inViet Nam.

The upcoming Vu Lan VeggieFestival is organised by Tu Ky Pagoda, An Lac Businessmen Community, GamudaLand Vietnam and Thai Ha Books Company.

The organisers said thenon-profit event also aims to promote the humanitarian values of eating veggiefood. 

The event includes a foodfair by 50 vegetarian restaurants and organic food stores from Hanoi andneighbouring cities. Several experts will share with participantsinformation on healthy eating as a vegetarian.

The second event is aseries of activities honouring parental love.   

Superior Buddhistmonk Thich Hai Tang from Long An Pagoda in the central province of QuangTri will talk about parents’ love for their children. A painting exhibitionreflecting the theme of a mother’s love will also be held. Several solemnceremonies are also planned as expression for children’s respect of parents,including children washing parents’ feet.  

About 4,000 to 5,000visitors are expected to take part in the event at Gamuda City near the Yen SoPark, in Hanoi’s Hoang Mai district. More information can be found on thewebsite: tetchayvulan.com
