Pretoria (VNA) – The Vietnamese Embassy in Mozambique has recently held a series of events to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 – 2025) and the 50th anniversary of Vietnam–Mozambique diplomatic relations (June 25, 1975 –2025).
Speaking at a reception held as part of a friendly football Tournament organised by the embassy, Vietnamese Ambassador to Mozambique Tran Thi Thu Thin reflected on the profound significance of the historic victory on April 30, 1975. She described it as a monumental triumph of patriotism and the Vietnamese people's desire for independence, freedom, and national unity after decades of division.
The Ambassador emphasised that this was a time for all participants to reflect on the journey taken, to celebrate shared pride, and to look forward to a promising future.
She highlighted that over nearly a century under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, with 80 years of independence, 50 years of reunification, and nearly 40 years of Doi Moi (Renewal), Vietnam has overcome tremendous hardship to rise from a war-ravaged nation to a dynamic emerging economy. With a spirit of independence, self-reliance, confidence, and national pride, Vietnam is now entering a new era of prosperity and development, she stated.
The diplomat said 2025 marks a significant milestone in Vietnam–Mozambique relations, celebrating 50 years since the two countries established diplomatic ties. Over the past five decades, the traditional friendship and solidarity between the two nations have been nurtured and strengthened by successive generations of leaders and people. Mozambique has remained a close friend and a key partner of Vietnam in Africa, she added.
Bilateral cooperation has made strides across various fields, from politics and diplomacy to economics, telecommunications, agriculture, healthcare, and education. Notable examples include the successful Movitel joint venture, trilateral agricultural cooperation programmes, and the longstanding contributions of Vietnamese medical experts in Mozambique. These initiatives stand as clear evidence of a vibrant and sustainable partnership.
The ambassador announced that to mark Vietnam’s National Reunification Day, the country will host two high-level Mozambican delegations - one from the Mozambican Government, led by Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Mozambican Communities Abroad Maria de Fatima Simao Manso, and the other from the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) Party led by Secretary-General Chakil Aboobacar. These trips to Vietnam, including attendance at a commemorative ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City, underscore the deepening cooperation and mutual support between the two nations, she said.
On behalf of FRELIMO, Ludmila Maguni, Secretary of the Party's Central Committee, extended warm congratulations to the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Vietnamese people on their 50th anniversary of nationa reunification. She stressed that the event is not only of historic significance for Vietnam but also resonates deeply with the Mozambican people and FRELIMO, who have long supported liberation and independence movements.
Maguni reaffirmed the enduring and fruitful relationship between the two Parties and Governments, highlighting that the deep-rooted comradeship between the two Parties has laid a solid political foundation for comprehensive bilateral cooperation.
José António Alberto Matsinhe, Director of the Directorate of Asia and Oceania at Mozambique’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, commended the Vietnamese Embassy for hosting the friendly football tournament, noting it as a meaningful opportunity for institutions and communities to strengthen unity and friendship. He underscored the depth and breadth of bilateral ties, which have delivered tangible, practical benefits for both countries' people.
During the reception, guests watched a short film capturing the historic significance of Vietnam’s reunification and enjoyed traditional Vietnamese and Mozambican cuisine.
✱ Earlier that day, the final match, closing ceremony, and awards presentation of the friendly football tournament were held. FRELIMO’s team took first place, followed by the diplomatic community team in Mozambique in second. The third prize was shared between the team of Mozambique’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and the Vietnamese community team./.
