UNHRC adopts Vietnam-proposed resolution on climate change, human rights

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on July 14 wrapped up its 47th session in Geneva, Switzerland, with 27 resolutions adopted, including one regarding climate change and human rights, which was initiated and compiled by Vietnam together with Bangladesh and the Philippines, focusing on vulnerable groups, especially the disabled and the elderly.

Geneva (VNA) ✃– The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on July 14 wrappedup its 47th session in Geneva, Switzerland, with 27 resolutions adopted, including one regarding climate change and human rights, which was initiated and compiled byVietnam together with Bangladesh and the Philippines, focusing on vulnerable groups, especially the disabled and theelderly.


Since 2014, Vietnamand UN member states have introduced the annual resolutions on climate change andhuman rights to the UNHRC for adoption, focusing on the rights of children,immigrants and women.

🐼 At the 47th session, the Vietnamese delegation delivered speeches at 22 discussions on the right tohealth care, and the right of the elderly and immigrants amid climatechange, gender equality and extreme poverty reduction following the COVID-19pandemic.

Ambassador Le ThiTuyet Mai, head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the UN, the World TradeOrganisation and other international organisations in Geneva, highlightedthe country's achievements in promoting and protecting human rights.

She affirmed that Vietnamsupports the UN’s human rights mechanisms as well as practical and constructivedialogues on the issue.

Mai called oncountries to step up COVID-19 vaccine production, ensure timely and fair accessto vaccines to effectively deal with the pandemic and foster inclusive andsustainable recovery.

Representatives fromVietnam and ASEAN member states also delivered several joint speeches on topics such as response tothe COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and human rights, prevention of violence againstwomen, technical cooperation to promote the right to education and ensure fair and inclusive educationand life-long study for all citizens.

The Vietnamesedelegation actively took part in building the contents of the documents and co-sponsored initiatives in thespirit of dialogue and cooperation, ensuring that the UNHRC’s activities are inline with basic principles of international law.
