UN climate change official promises support to Vietnam

He underlined that ifnothing is done about the current emission level, the sea level couldrise by 98 cm by 2100, while even a rise of half that level alreadybrings severe consequences for many countries, including Vietnam.

The PM told Pachauri that Vietnam considers the response toclimate change, rising sea level and natural disasters as crucial to itspath of sustainable development.

The country established aNational Steering Committee on Climate Change led by the PM and anadvisory council to update the government on global reports and offerrecommendations on coping measures over short and long terms.

Vietnam will do its best and join efforts with global community to cope with the changing climate, he said.

Besides making its own efforts, Vietnam is keen to receive moreeffective assistance from the UN, foreign donors and scientists,including sharing studies, and offering recommendations and funding forrelevant projects, the leader added.

At the same time, hehailed the effective support that the UN has given to Vietnam in manyareas, including climate change response.-VNA

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
