UN allocates 15 million USD to Indonesia in wake of disasters

The United Nations on October 2 announced the allocation of 15 million USD to aid those affected by earthquakes and tsunami that recently struck Sulawesi island, Indonesia.

Hanoi (VNA) - The United Nationson October 2 announced the allocation of 15 million USD to aid those affectedby earthquakes and tsunami that recently struck Sulawesi island, Indonesia.

The money from the Central EmergencyResponse Fund will support UN agencies already on the ground to respond to keypriorities identified by the Indonesian government and assist tens of thousandsof people in need.

UN Under Secretary General for HumanitarianAffairs Mark Lowcock said the funds will allow UN agencies and humanitarianorganisations to support the government-led response in logistics, safe waterand sanitation, health care, camp coordination and management, and protectionservices.

In a press briefing at the White House, USPresident Donald Trump extended his condolences to the Indonesian governmentand people over the damage caused by the disasters.

He pledged to send a rapid response team toIndonesia for recovery efforts.

On September 28, the central Sulawesiprovince was hit by 6.1 and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes and a subsequent tsunamiof 6m. Up to 48,000 were forced to evacuate.

The death toll has amounted to 1,374 while113 others remain unaccounted-for.-VNA
