At a conference to review the sector’s operations last year and launchactivities for 2012 in Hanoi on Jan. 7, PM Dung urged the sector tofulfill the target of reducing between 5 and 10 percent of roadaccidents in the traffic safety year 2012.
Dungasked the sector to build mechanism and policies to focus humanresources on expanding National Highway No. 1, some degrading highwaysand expressways linking Hanoi and Lao Cai, Hanoi and Hai Phong, Hanoiand Thai Nguyen and Lach Huyen port, and develop a transport system in amodern and economic manner.
The PM highly valuedthe achievements made by the sector last year, especially in buildingtransport infrastructure and goods transport. He said, however, that thesector needs to tackle issues such as traffic accidents, low-qualityconstruction projects and poor planning management.
Last year, Vietnam saw a year-on-year decrease of 9.18 percent in roadaccidents, 3.8 percent in fatalities and 7.37 percent in trafficinjuries./.
According to the Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRC), this year’s campaign provided long-term aid for 3,785 individuals and organisations. Support included houses, clean water systems, school meal facilities, books, and livelihood assistance, with a total value of more than 118 billion VND.
The programmes have brought about positive changes to rural infrastructure, comprehensively improved the material and spiritual lives of farmers, and contributed to Vietnam's economic restructuring, said PM Pham Minh Chinh.
