Traffic accidents kill 98 people during holidays

A total of 125 road accidents occurred across the country during the holidays between April 29 and May 2, killing 98 people and injuring 90 others.

Hanoi (VNA) – A totalof 125 road accidents occurred across the country during the holidays betweenApril 29 and May 2, killing 98 people and injuring 90 others. According to theNational Committee for Traffic Safety, the figures represented respective dropsof 17.8 percent, 11.7 percent and 34.8 percent. The committee also saidtraffic jams were recorded in many places, especially in ring roads andgateways of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on April 28 afternoon and April 29morning as people flocked to their homelands and other localities for holidays. Traffic congestionswere reported in some areas of southern Binh Duong and Tien Giang provinces.Traffic was also congested in the northern port city of Hai Phong, centralThanh Hoa province and a toll station on Hanoi-Phap Van expressway due to thehigh number of vehicles. Vice Chairman of the NationalCommittee for Traffic Safety Khuat Viet Hung said traffic police nationwidehandled up to 23,790 road and waterway traffic safety violation cases, imposingfines of more than 11.5 billion VND, seizing 98 cars and almost 3,600motorbikes and revoking 1,012 driving licences. Chief of the committee’soffice Nguyen Trong Thai said its hotline received 25 calls and messagescomplaining of increased prices of bus tickets, coaches carrying morepassengers than permitted and traffic congestions. The committee orderedrelevant agencies to look into the complaints and deal with violators, hesaid.-VNA
