Dong Thap (VNA) – Authorities of southern Dong Thap province and Cambodia's Prey Veng province jointly organised a ceremony to inaugurate the Thuong Phuoc – Kaoh Roka international land and waterway border gate pair on January 17.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu, who is also Chairman of the National Boundary Commission, highlighted the sound development of the Vietnam–Cambodia relations in all fields, bringing practical benefits to the people of both countries and contributing to peace, stability, and cooperation in the region.
The two sides have organised and managed the construction of a peaceful border based on law, international practices, in accordance with their traditional friendship, he said.
The border gate pair's opening will help synchronise import and export activities through both land and waterway routes, take a further step towards realising the planning of border gates along the entire Vietnam-Cambodia borderline, which is significantly contributing to the implementation of the planning for the Mekong Delta region and the planning for Dong Thap province for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision towards 2050, Vu added.
Dong Thap province and Prey Veng province share a border line of over 50 km with seven border gates, including two international ones. The border gates serve as important gateways to promote trade and transport of goods across the Vietnam - Cambodia border and countries in the region.
In the 2022 – 2024 period, the total import and export value of goods across the border between Dong Thap and Prey Veng provinces reached over 1.4 billion USD. Among these, the Thuong Phuoc - Kaoh Roka international border gate pair accounts for a significant share of imports and exports thanks to its favourable geographical location in terms of land and waterway routes. However, the potential of this border gate pair has not been fully utilised as it had only performed the waterway management function.
꧟ It takes about 60 minutes by road to get the capital city of Phnom Penh from this border gate pair. This is the fatsest route, connecting to major cities in Cambodia and to Thailand, facilitating Dong Thap in welcoming international tourists travelling by road through ASEAN countries./.
