Three major airports need over 5 billion USD for upgrading

Hanoi (VNA) - More than 116 trillion VND(5.11 billion USD) is needed to build Long Thanh airport and upgrade Noi Baiand Tan Son Nhat airports for the 2018-2021 period, with a vision to 2025, accordingto the State-owned Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV)investment plan.

The number of passengers coming through 22 airportsnationwide managed and operated by ACV is expected to grow 10 percenteach year between 2018 and 2021 and is estimated to reach about 137 million by2021.

Annual passenger growth rate between 2022 and 2025 is estimated toaverage 7 percent, hitting 185 million by 2025. Based on these numbers, ACVestimated investment on the three key airports.

During 2018-2021, Noi Bai International Airport inHanoi will expand international terminal T2 to reach capacity of 15 millionpassengers per year and terminal T3 with capacity of 10 million passengers peryear, while upgrading parking areas and supporting facilities. The upgradelooks to enable the airport to serve 30 million passengers across all terminalsby 2020 and 60 million by 2030.

The total estimated investment for the upgradeis nearly 11.2 trillion VND (493.3 million USD).

Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCM City needsover 12.6 trillion VND (555 million USD) to improve its capacity. Terminal T3is planned to be constructed to serve 10 million passengers per year, alongwith an expansion of parking areas, runways and assisting equipment. Theairport expects to welcome 45 million passengers per year by 2020.

Long Thanh Airport in thesouthern province of Dong Nai is in need of over 92.1 trillion (4 billionUSD) for the first phase of its construction by 2025.

The construction project includes building onerunway, one passenger terminal and other supporting facilities to serve 25million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo per year.

In a related move, the Ministry of Transportsubmitted a report to the Government on the plan to use capital to upgraderunways at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat international airports.

According to the report, the ministry agreed toallow ACV to mobilise over 1.9 trillion VND (83.7 million USD) and 2.3 trillion(101.3 million USD) to invest in Tan Son Nhat and Noi Bai airports,respectively.-VNA
