Thailand to purchase power from Myanmar

Thailand and Myanmar are discussing the framework for a new electricity purchase contract between the two countries in which the former will buy 10,000 MW of power from the latter, the Energy Ministry of Thailand has said.
Thailand and Myanmar are discussing the framework for a new electricitypurchase contract between the two countries in which the former will buy10,000 MW of power from the latter, the Energy Ministry of Thailand hassaid.

Thai Energy Minister Pongsak Ruktapongpisalsaid the country plans to purchase 1,000 MW from Myanmar 's My TongHydropower Project and 3,000 MW from another power plant, coal-fired, atDawei.

The power purchase agreement will benefitthe economic development projects of both countries as demand forcost-efficient power generation rises in line with economic prosperity.

Both hydro and coal power plants have lowinvestment, however, the plan will require Thai Parliament's approval inaccordance with Article 190 of the Thai Constitution.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and RatchaburiElectricity Generating Holding (RATCH) are investment partners in thetwo Myanmar power plants covered by the plan.-VNA
