Bangkok (VNA) – Four million Thai senior citizens will each receive 10,000 THB (289.5 USD) in cash from the government ahead of Lunar New Year holiday which will fall in early February next year.

Following a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on November 19, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavachira said that this is the second phase of the government’s handout scheme and will cost about 40 billion THB, with priority given to those in need.

The money will be directly transferred to senior citizens who have already registered and verified their identities through Thang Rath, a government’s mobile application.

To be eligible, an elderly recipient’s monthly income must not exceed 70,000 THB, with no more than 500,000 THB in bank savings, he said, stating arrangements for those without smartphones will be announced soon.

༺ The Pheu Thai Party had earlier planned to hand out digital money worth 10,000 THB to each of 45 million Thai people aged from 16./.
