Thailand to be Toyota’s compact car production centre

Leading Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor Corporation has chosen Thailand as its compact car development and production centre for export, according to Thai media.

Bangkok (VNA) – Leading Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor Corporation has chosenThailand as its compact car development and production centre for export, accordingto Thai media.

Shinya Kotera, managing officer of Toyota Motor, revealed theinformation to Thai Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak at a recentmeeting in Bangkok.

The move is part of Toyota’s emerging-market compact car scheme, which will bedeveloped together with its fully-owned subsidiary Daihatsu. The company hadpreviously announced the establishment of the new internal company, whichwas christened the ‘Emerging-market Compact Car Company’.

The company will develop compact cars specificallyfor developing countries, leveraging on Daihatsu’s expertise of producingquality and affordable products, and remaining “untethered by conventionalpractices and rules.”

Once being approved by Toyota’s board of directors in May this year, this willbe the company’s largest project in 50 years.

Toyota also pledges to support technology development and human resourcestraining for Thailand’s auto industry, said the Thai Deputy PM.-VNA
