Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand needs to prioritise infrastructure development inthe Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) to lure investment, Thai media on November7 quoted Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Atusripitak as saying.

Deputy PM Somkidmade the statement during a working session with the Ministry of Transport.Three projects of high priority include Laem Chabang port, an aircraft repairand maintenance centre and Bangkok-Rayong express railway.

He also notedthat bids for the constructions need to be started this year.

The third phaseof the Laem Chabang port project needs an investment of 88 billion THB (2.65billion USD), aiming to double the capacity of goods transport.

Meanwhile, ThaiAirways and Airbus will sign a deal on building the aircraft repair and maintenancecentre in the coming time. It is part of activities to expand U-Tapao airportwith total investment of 200 billion THB (6.03 billion USD).

TheBangkok-Rayong express railway will be implemented with an estimated budget of158 billion THB (4.76 billion USD). It is expected to connect Bangkok’s threecentral airports of Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang and U-Tapao.

Research on therailway will be submitted to the EEC Policy Committee, which chaired by Thai PrimeMinister Prayut Chan-ocha on November 17.-VNA
