Thailand has sought government–to-government (G2G) deals with Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV) to address the shortage of workers in the fishing industry.

Waranon Pitiwan,Director-General of theThai Labour Ministry’s Department of Employment, said thata large number of migrant workers refused to register for work permits duringthe recent registration period. He said these labourers instead chose torelocate, and remain illegal workers, which ultimately creates demand for humanresources.
He revealed that Thailand’sCommand Centre for Combating Illegal Fishing (CCCIF) will soon meet with theMarine Department, the Fisheries Department, the Labour Ministry and the RoyalThai Navy to seek solutions to this issue.
He said that one of theinitial remedies is to hold talks with CLMV nations to sign G2G deals ondirectly bringing labourers from those countries to work in the fisheriesindustry in Thailand.
According to Waranon,intense workloads and the stress of being at sea for long periods of time arethe main reasons hindering migrant labourers from working in the industry. Therefore,employers should consider offering attractive incentives to their employees, henoted.
He urged migrant workerswho don't have work permits to register their nationality with the authorizedagencies, while underlining the government’s commitment to eliminating illegalwork in the Kingdom within a year.-VNA
