Thailand punishes 302 officials involved in rice pledging scheme

Up to 302 officials from the Public Warehouse Organisation and Marketing Organisation For Farmers along with many warehouse owners and surveyors have been charged with malfeasance in connection with the Yingluck government’s controversial rice pledging scheme, Thai media reported on April 2.

Bangkok (VNA) – Up to 302 officialsfrom the Public Warehouse Organisation and Marketing Organisation For Farmers alongwith many warehouse owners and surveyors have been charged with malfeasance inconnection with the Yingluck government’s controversial rice pledging scheme,Thai media reported on April 2. The Public SectorAnti-Corruption Commission (PACC) is investigating 986 cases against officialsinvolved with the scheme, especially in the stockpiling of rice bought fromfarmers. The PACC had completed half the number of cases. Violators will facedisciplinary measures and criminal charges. The names of theofficials have also been forwarded to the Anti-Money Laundering Office forinvestigation. The investigation of allcases will be completed in June 2017.

The Statebudget loss caused by the officials was estimated at about 115 billion THB (3.3billion USD).-VNA
