Bangkok (VNA) – Chairman of the Thai Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) Meechai Ruchupan warned on July 27 that if voters reject the draft constitution on the August 7 referendum, the country could face political instability.

The CDC Chairman rejected rumours of a conspiracy to ensure the draft is rejected so that Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha can prolong his grip on power. He claimed that the groundless rumours aimed to create misunderstanding.

Meechai stated that if the new draft is rejected, the time frame set by the government to transition to democracy will be off track, and the PM will be under pressure to leave his position.

Meanwhile, President of the Democrat Party, Abhisit Vejjajiva opposed the new draft constitution, saying it does not solve the country’s existing problems.

💞 The new draft constitution, announced by the CDC on March 29, comprises 105 pages with 279 articles. It is expected to be a solution to a decade long political crisis in the Southeast Asian country.-VNA
