Bangkok (VNA) – The RoyalThai Police has formed the CyberCrime Investigation Bureau (CCIB), a new unitthat aims to deal specifically with cybercrimes.
At a press briefing on October 12 tointroduce the new agency, CCIB first commissionerLieut. Gen. Kornchai Klaikluengpledged to work closely with his international counterparts to crack down ontypes of computer crimes.
He said that there arecurrently 333 officers at the bureau, adding that the bureau needs to recruitmore officers as it is facing a shortage of staff.
Kornchai said that first, the bureauwill focus on familiarising its staff with the latest technology and variousforms of cybercrimes, so it will likely take on more general cases in its firstmonth of operations.
The next three months will be spentfocusing on sharpening cybercrime investigative skills, he added.
Until the CCIB is prepared to take upmore responsibilities, technology-related cases will be handled by theTechnology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) of the Central InvestigationBureau.
After that, CCIB's staff will beready to handle complaints from all around the country, he said.
In serious cases - such as datahacking and/or online fraud - local police can initiate an investigationwithout having to wait for the CCIB. In cases where local authorities lack themeans to investigate an incident of cybercrime, the CCIB can take over theinvestigation and ideally, finish them within 15 days, he said.
In one year, the CCIB will be readyto handle all sort of complaints, including defamation, threat, fake news,online gambling and illegal trade.
In the future, the CCIB plans to setup branches and offices all across the country, including in Chon Buri,KhonKaen, Chiang Mai and SuratThani, the commissioner said./.
