Bangkok (NNT/VNA) - The Pollution ControlDepartment (PCD) of Thailand is raising public awareness on keeping rivers clean with aboating campaign cleaning up waste on Chao Phraya River through 10 provinces.
The PCD Director-General, Pralong Dumrongthai, said the Ministry of NaturalResources and Environment (MNRE) has joined hands with Thammasat University,the Ministry of Interior, civil society organizations, and partners, to arrangea boat rowing activity to clean up garbage from Chao Phraya River, from Pak NamPho along the 400-kilometer river stretch to the river mouth in the Gulf ofThailand.
The activity, which is taking place on December 10-23, runs fromNakhon Sawan to Uthai Thani, Chainat, Singburi, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, PathumThani, Nonthaburi, Bangkok, and Samut Prakan.
Participants have so far removed many kinds of garbage from the river,including clothes, plastic bags, spray cans, engine oil containers, electricalcircuit boards, floor bleach gallons, pesticide, lighters, Krathong, branches,leaves, glasses, plastic bottles and metal.
The PCD is also constantly testing the water samples collected at each eventlocation.
The PCD chief said this event is aimed to call upon villagers by the river tostop littering into the river. The general public are also invited to join theactivity close to their home in designated locations, or sign up online to makea declaration to stop littering.-NNT/VNA
