Thai PM urges foreign workers to complete registration by deadline

The Thai government has reminded foreign labourers to verify their nationality and complete the authorisation process for working in Thailand by June 30, reiterating that employees and employers will face legal action if they miss the deadline.

Bangkok (NNT/VNA) – The Thai government has remindedforeign labourers to verify their nationality and complete the authorisationprocess for working in Thailand by June 30, reiterating that employees andemployers will face legal action if they miss the deadline.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha has received a briefingon progress in the second phase of the nationality verification andregistration process of foreign labourers from three countries.

He was told that all workers from Myanmar have completed the process while22,770 workers from Cambodia and 5,614 from Laos are still pending. Anestimated 59,000 workers have yet to contact their nearest One Stop ServiceCentre to initiate the process.

The PM urged foreign workers to complete the requirements byJune 30, while insisting that no leniency will be given after the deadline.

Those who fail to register by the date will be forced to return home and haveto re-enter under Memoranda of Understanding.

From July 1, authorities are to seek out illegal migrant labourersand fine them 5,000-50,000 THB before deporting them and banning them fromre-entry for two years.

Employers will be fined 10,000-100,000 THB per employee andface up to one year in prison for subsequent offenses with further fines of50,000-200,000 THB. They may also be barred from hiring foreign laborers for upto three years.-VNA
