Bangkok (VNA) – Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha confirmed onFebruary 8 that he will contest in the upcoming March 24 election as acandidate of the pro-military Palang Pracharat Party.

Two othercandidates of the party will be former Minister of Industry Uttama Savanayanaand Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak.

Meanwhile,Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya, the elder sister of Thai King MahaVajiralongkorn, is the sole Prime Ministerial candidate from the Thai RaksaChart Party, whose members include former members of ousted PM ThaksinShinawatra’s key political group, Pheu Thai.

Talking toreporters, Thai Raksa Chart Party leader Preechapol Pongpanich affirmed thatthe Princess is knowledgeable and is highly suitable.

Earlier, the ElectionCommission (EC) announced that the general election will be held on March 24 torestore civilian rule. This will be the first general election in the countrysince the military coup in 2014.

In January, theThai administration lifted a ban on political activities, allowing parties toorganise election campaigns.-VNA
