During the month, Muslims will stock cooked rice, meatand vegetables, date palms, and other canned fruits to break the fastwith their families after sunset. The holy month of Ramadan is devotedto dawn-to-dusk fasting, prayers, and doing good deeds with thethree-day holiday of Eid al-Fitr.

Muslims believe God revealedthe first verses of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad during Ramadan,which starts with the sighting of the new moon. Ramadan's startingperiod varies because Muslim countries and groups use different ways ofcalculating when the new moon is sighted.

The Sheikh IslamOffice has tentatively set June 28 as the first day of Ramadan. However,if the new moon is not spotted on June 27 night, the first day ofRamadan will be pushed back to June 29. The fasting period will last forone month.-VNA/NNT
